Gavrilova into Connecticut third round

Australian No.1 Daria Gavrilova has been Hungary's Timea Babos in straight sets to advance to the third round of the New Haven Open in Connecticut.

Australia's world No.26 Daria Gavrilova has beaten Hungary's Timea Babos at the New Haven Open to advance to the third round.

Russian-born Gavrilova, who overtook Samantha Stosur to become Australia's top-ranked female player earlier this year, won a tight match 7-5 7-6 (8-6). She won six straight tiebreak points to take the second set and advance. Tuesday's clash was the second time the pair had met with the ledger now standing at one apiece.

Gavrilova beat qualifier Kristyna Pliskova, younger sister of world No.1 Karolina, in the first round.

In other early action in Connecticut Jana Cepelova of Ukraine was forced to retire against Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

Meanwhile top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska survived a second-set comeback bid from Eugenie Bouchard to advance.

The 10th-ranked Radwanska, who won the title in New Haven last year, defeated Bouchard 6-3 7-5 in 1 hour, 45 minutes. The Polish veteran is 4-0 in her career against the Canadian, who needed a wild card to enter the tournament.

Bouchard fought off two match points but was broken while serving to force a tiebreak.
