Rising Australian tennis star Daria Gavrilova has fought her way into the second round of the WTA event in Charleston, South Carolina, with a gutsy three-set win.

The 22-year-old beat Kazakhstan's world No.86-ranked Zarina Diyas 6-1 1-6 6-3 on Monday (Tuesday AEST).

The 12th seeded Australian will next face either China's Shuai Zhang or Dutch hopeful Lesley Kerkhove.

Compatriot Sam Stosur is due to play Aleksandra Krunic in her first round match, also on Monday.
