Malcolm Turnbull says there is ample time between the July 2 election and the end of the year to hold a national vote on same-sex marriage.

The prime minister has pledged to hold a plebiscite on extending the definition of marriage to include couples of the same sex.

"We will hold it as soon as possible after the election. Given that the election is on July 2, we do have ample time between then and the end of the year," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Sydney on Monday.
