Cabinet minister Malcolm Turnbull believes any plebiscite on same-sex marriage should be held before the next federal election.
"My own view is that it would be good if the matter was dealt with before the next election," he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.
Gay marriage could overshadow other important issues such as economic management and national security if it was not settled before an election campaign, Mr Turnbull warned.
