Geelong Grammar sorry for child abuse

Geelong Grammar School has again apologised to former students sexually abused by staff and says it will continue to support the survivors.

Geelong Grammar accepts some of its former leaders failed students sexually abused by staff at the prestigious school.

The child sex abuse royal commission has criticised the way a number of senior Geelong Grammar staff, including headmasters, handled abuse accusations and their failure to investigate or report the allegations.

Geelong Grammar School principal Stephen Meek has again apologised to victims of the "appalling" abuse.

"We are also very sorry that some of the school's former senior staff neglected to respond to some of our past students with the respect and protection they so rightfully deserved," Mr Meek said in a letter to the school community.

"The school deeply regrets the wrongful conduct by some of its former staff and I assure you that the current school leadership will continue to address these matters and support those affected."

Mr Meek said the school reviewed its child protection policies each year to ensure they reflect its zero tolerance of child abuse and comply with changes in legislation.

The school had no formal systems, policies and procedures in place to specifically deal with or prevent child sexual abuse before 1994.

The royal commission noted the school had implemented new policies since Mr Meek became principal in 2004, including detailed sections on the obligation to disclose sex offences against a child and mandatory reporting.

"Although policies are in place, there is no system to either monitor the success of the policies or capture how often teachers are reporting allegations in accordance with the policies and procedures," it said.

Five staff members have been convicted for abusing Geelong Grammar students while there have been allegations levelled against others.
