French cyclist Alexandre Geniez of FDJ claimed victory in his homeland as the gruelling 225km 15th stage of the Tour of Spain from Andorra to Peyragudes crossed the border into France.

He broke away on a solo escape before the last of four category-one climbs to claim the stage starting in the principality of Andorra, passing through Spanish territory, and finishing at the Peyragudes summit.

Geniez finished more than three minutes ahead of Italian Michele Scarponi and Irishman Nicholas Roche in a time of 6hrs 20mins 12secs.

Giro d'Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali maintained his lead in the overall classification, finishing fourth alongside American Chris Horner and Spain's Alejandro Valverde who remain second and third respectively.

Nibali showed his good form by responding to attacks by Valverde, Joaquim Rodriguez and Horner.
