German backpacker cable tied,raped: court

A man has faced a sentencing hearing in Brisbane for a Wolf Creek-style attack on a German backpacker in August 2013.

A man fed a teenage German backpacker chocolate laced with sedatives before restraining her with cable-ties and raping her in a shearing shed in rural Queensland, a court has heard.

Peter Van de Wetering, 48, was due to be sentenced in Brisbane's District Court on Monday afternoon for multiple offences, including rape.

In his submissions, crown prosecutor David Meredith told the court the man had worn fake facial hair when he picked up his 19-year-old victim from a bus stop near Cottonvale in August 2013, before he tied her hands and took her to a shearing shed, where she was raped.
