A 24 year-old German man attempting to find a short cut through a park has managed to get trapped inside a women's prison.

Local broadcaster NDR reports that the man wandered into the front courtyard area of the Hildesheimer Women's Prison when he saw an open gate. When he realised his mistake, the gate had already shut behind him.

When calling for help, NDR reports, the Mayor, walking past at the time, heard his cries.

Prison officials, recognising the Mayor, agreed to release the man.

Police were unable to explain why the gate was open - but reports later surfaced saying it had been faulty.
