A 62-year-old German tourist spent two days waiting for help after collapsing on a Tasmanian bushwalking track.

A Victorian walking group found the man on the South Coast Track near Cox Bight on Thursday and alerted authorities about 1pm.

The Westpac rescue helicopter winched the man out of the bush and he was flown to Royal Hobart Hospital, suffering a medical condition.

Tasmania Police said the incident was a reminder for hikers to carry a means of communication such as a satellite phone, personal location beacon or both.

The South Coast Track is described on the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service as a "challenging walk" in a region "exposed to harsh weather conditions."

"Walkers must be fully self-sufficient, well equipped and experienced," the website reads.
