The bodies of ten German tourists killed in this week's suicide bombing in the historic Sultanahmet district of Istanbul are being flown home.

The Dogan news agency reported on Saturday that a German military plane had departed Ataturk Airport in the Turkish metropolis, with each of the bodies arriving at the airport in separate funeral vehicles.

Most of the victims were retired people on holiday in Turkey, a popular destination for Germans.

Turkish authorities blamed the attack on the Islamic State extremist group and say a Syrian man who had registered as a refugee was the bomber.

Police have detained seven people in connection with the attack which has shaken the country's vital tourism sector.
