The mother of at least eight babies, whose bodies were found in a house in southern Germany, has confessed to killing the infants, a police spokeswoman says.

The woman said some of them had been born alive and that she killed them after the birth.

Police found the decomposed remains of at least eight babies wrapped in towels and plastic bags in a house in Wallenfels, a small town halfway between Munich and Berlin.

Police began questioning the woman, who now lives in the nearby town Kronach, on Friday evening local time.

According to media reports, she had moved to the town several weeks before after splitting up with her partner.

A 55-year-old man was also taken in for questioning but later released without charge.

The results of autopsies on the children to reveal when and how the children were murdered, are results expected early next week.
