Germany expects 1.5m refugees this year

Germany is expecting receive up to 1.5 million asylum-seekers this year, according to a newspaper report.

German authorities expect up to 1.5 million asylum seekers to arrive in Germany this year - almost double the current official forecast, the Bild newspaper reports.

"Migratory pressures will increase further. We now expect seven to ten thousand illegal border crossings every day in the fourth quarter," Bild said citing confidential internal government projections.

Up until now the German government has said it expects the number of asylum seekers making their way to the country to be about 800,000 this year.

"The high number of asylum seekers runs the risk of becoming an enormous burden for the states and municipalities," the report said.

Those who are granted asylum will also bring their families to Germany, Bild said quoting the internal report.

The report is likely to add to tensions in Germany about the wave of refugees, with state and regional governments saying they are already overburdened by the numbers and frictions emerging in Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition.
