Germany has signed on to a global statement urging "a strong response" to a deadly chemical weapons attack blamed on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
The announcement by Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Saturday means Germany becomes the fifth European Union member to sign the statement issued at a G20 summit in Saint Petersburg.
There, it was signed by 11 countries - including the US, Britain, France, Italy and Spain.
