Giant Buntine won't change attitude

Fearless GWS Giants AFL defender Matthew Buntine won't change his style of play despite suffering three bouts of concussion in a year.

Frequent concussion victim Matthew Buntine has no intention of changing his fearless attitude, but the GWS defender admits another incident will "red flag" him into seeing a specialist.

Buntine recently recovered from his third bout of concussion in 12 months.

Giants' AFL coach Leon Cameron said earlier this month that Buntine was perhaps too brave for his own good.

The defender has had other injuries and said those rather than his concussions had been probably been the ones where he had demonstrated the most bravery.

"I've been a bit unfortunate with a few clips," Buntine said.

"Probably the times I've been courageous I've broken (teammate) Joel (Patfull's) ribs and broken my own ribs and not got concussed, so I just see ball and do what I can.

"Probably, with experience, I'll know when to go and when not to and use my wits to avoid some very serious contact, but it certainly won't change the way I play.

Still only 22, Buntine revealed any future concussion incidents could lead to him seeking more medical advice.

"If I happened to get another one it might be a bit of a red flag and I'd go and see some specialists," Buntine said.

"But I'm not going out there to get myself knocked out, so hopefully I don't have any more concussions throughout my career.'

Buntine recently experimented with headgear at training, but opted against using it in matches.

"I didn't find it too comfortable and I can't hear 'Shawy' (teammate Heath Shaw) yelling down my ears with it blocking my earways, so it's better off not playing with it."

Buntine said he was happy to play lock down roles and have the likes of Shaw and fellow half-backs Zac Williams and Nathan Wilson provide the dash out of defence

He was respectful of Essendon's forwards this Sunday, despite the Bombers averaging under 60 points a game.

"Joey Daniher is a very big threat and Mitch Brown has been playing well and Mark Jamar is a big boy."
