A screenshot from the Vine posted bu Greenpeace USA.

Posted online three days ago, the footage shows a squid attacking a submarine during the organisation’s expedition in the Bering Sea, located between Alaska and Russia.

The Vine, posted with the caption “it’s a squid attacking a submarine during a #BeringSea expedition with @GreenspeaceUSA”, has already garnered more than 1.7 million views.

The squid appears to swim away unharmed after squirting black ink.

The Greenpeace expedition is part of the organisation’s campaign to protect the sealife from industrial fishing, which Greenpeace claims is uprooting and crushing coral and sponge communities.

“In the Bering Sea - where the US catches more fish than anywhere else – long lived coral and sponge communities provide fish and marine life with shelter and nurseries, feeding and spawning grounds,” Greenpeace’s website says.

“…We must take a precautionary approach and set aside representative portions of critical habitat – such as in the Bering Sea Canyons – as an insurance policy for our future.”
