Giants not crowing over Swans' AFL decline

Greater Western Sydney appear to have Harbour City bragging rights for 2017 locked up in the AFL but Giants defender Adam Kennedy expects the Swans to rally.

Sydney's AFL wheel of fortune has spun dramatically westward this season, but Giants defender Adam Kennedy is tipping the Swans to crawl their way back up the ladder after a horrendous start.

After just six rounds, Greater Western Sydney already look to have bragging rights secured for the first time in their six-season existence.

Five straight wins and an impressive percentage of 133.3 have the Giants parked in second spot behind Adelaide, the only side to beat them this year.

Sydney, who have made the finals for the last seven seasons and 13 of the past 14, already look to be out of September calculations, with a 0-6 record anchoring them to the foot of the ladder.

Hawthorn, the AFL's other perennial September qualifier with seven straight finals campaigns in their rear-view mirror, are just one win and one spot above Sydney.

The Hawks have lost three games by 75 or more points and none of their defeats have been by less than four goals.

While the short-term premiership window seems to have slammed shut for Hawthorn and Sydney, it looks wide open for GWS, Adelaide and the reigning champion Bulldogs.

However, Kennedy wasn't about to crow over the sudden startling decline of the established heavyweights or proclaim a new order had been established.

'We've played the Swans and that was a tough contest, it just goes to show how even the league is," he said.

"I'm sure those two clubs are very proud clubs, so it wouldn't surprise me if they finished the year pretty strong and crawl their way back up the ladder.

"But at the same time we're happy with where we're at."

Kennedy has been one of the unsung heroes of GWS' early-season surge.

A Giants foundation player, Kennedy was dropped shortly before their maiden finals campaign last season and he admits it has given him "a little bit" of motivation this year.

"It was hard watching the boys play finals and not being out there," he said.
