Giants sign star onballer to new AFL deal

Star midfielder Dylan Shiel has spurned interest from Victorian AFL clubs to sign a new two-year deal with Greater Western Sydney.

Greater Western Sydney have locked away another of their gun midfielders, but it's Dylan Shiel and not man of the moment, Josh Kelly.

Speedster Shiel, 24, has signed a two-year contract extension taking him through to the end of the 2019 campaign.

Originally recruited from Victorian junior club Dandenong as a 17-year-old, in 2010, Shiel was one of the first players to sign with the Giants and has played 80 senior games.

He was due to come out of contract at the end of the season.

"I've been here from the start and have seen this club develop over the years," Shiel said.

"We're a close playing group and Sydney is home for me.

"We've built a strong culture and a loyal fan base and I'm really looking forward to helping the Giants continue to grow."

Shiel would have commanded a considerable contract from Victorian suitors, but joined star full-forward Jonathon Patton in choosing to re-sign with the Giants.

With Shiel secured, Kelly is the Giants player who hasn't yet committed to GWS beyond this season that clubs are most likely to covet.

Kelly is reportedly the target of a nine year $9 million play by North Melbourne, though GWS coach Leon Cameron has remained consistently optimistic the midfielder will stay at the club.
