GWS ace Adam Tomlinson is over a pre-season calf injury and ready to be the Giants' 'Mr Fix It' again this AFL season.

One of 11 players left at the club from GWS' first season in 2012, Tomlinson sent a scare through the Giants' camp in January.

The 25-year-old was cantering to victory in the club's 2km time trial but, 80 metres before the finish line, he felt pain in his right leg.

After an outstanding past two years, Tomlinson was a player Leon Cameron's team could ill afford to lose following Dylan Shiel's off-season departure and Callan Ward's knee injury.

But Tomlinson's relatively injury-free run continued as the calf issue was only minor. He will return to the Giants' team for Friday night's pre-season game against Adelaide.

He played mainly as a defender in 2017 before starring on a wing, with his height and running ability making him a handful for opposition players.

But he expects to spend time in the ruck again this season, particularly early in the year before big man Shane Mumford returns in round three from suspension.

"I see myself a lot more in the midfield this year, on the wing and pinch hitting in the ruck," Tomlinson told AAP.

"It can be a pretty lonely place on the wing at times so I don't mind getting near the ball and getting my hands on the pill.

"But I do enjoy the wing and ... getting around the ground and maybe sneaking forward to kick a goal."
