Lara Giddings has been confirmed as Tasmanian premier at a meeting of the parliamentary Labor Party in Hobart.

Ms Giddings fills the vacancy left by David Bartlett, who announced his resignation on Sunday to spend more time with his family.

She will be sworn in by Governor Peter Underwood on Monday afternoon.

Ms Giddings was elected with Bryan Green as her deputy at the meeting on Monday morning.

She is Tasmania's first female premier.

Greens leader Nick McKim has indicated his party will continue to support the Labor minority government.
