NT Chief Minister Adam Giles has congratulated Malcolm Turnbull for setting aside funds for indigenous women suffering domestic violence, saying "it's encouraging to see such strong leadership from the prime minister".
More than $20 million of Mr Turnbull's $100 million package to boost support services and practical measures for women fleeing abusive relationships is dedicated to helping indigenous women and communities.
It also includes $3.6 million pledged for the Cross Border Domestic Violence Intelligence Desk, which shares information on victims and perpetrators who move around the cross border region of Western Australia, South Australia and the NT.
A further $1.4 million will be provided to extend Community Engagement Police Officers in remote indigenous communities.
"Indigenous women in communities for too long have not always felt safe in homes, schools, work or on the streets," Mr Giles said on Thursday.
"This must change."
Minister for Women's Policy Bess Price says it's unacceptable that indigenous women are 48 times more likely to be admitted to hospital for reasons of assault than non-indigenous women.
"I'll be making it a priority to share my experiences on communities so that we can all learn and move forward from this very real epidemic in society," she says.
