Kevin Rudd's political future is in doubt as Prime Minister Julia Gillard prepares to unveil a new cabinet, with few changes expected.

Ms Gillard said on Sunday she was planning to speak to the former prime minister about his future role.

News Ltd reported on Monday that Rudd would not be in the ministry at the urging of senior Cabinet ministers.

Nor would there be any reward for factional powerbrokers including Bill Shorten, Mark Arbib and David Feeney.

The Australian newspaper has suggested Ms Gillard will appoint a current minister to replace her in her old portfolios, including education and workplace relations.

Ms Gillard is expected to announce the minor reshuffle on Monday or Tuesday.

Commentators are also tipping an early election if Ms Gillard can maintain an early bounce marked in weekend polls.
