Gillard honoured for Israel advocacy

The Jewish community has honoured former prime minister Julia Gillard for her advocacy of Israel.

Former prime minister Julia Gillard has been honoured for her work in strengthening Australia's links to Israel.

Ms Gillard was named the winner of the 2013 Jerusalem Prize at a Zionist Council of Victoria function in Melbourne on Tuesday night.

Council president Sam Tatarka said Ms Gillard had shown over her entire political career that "she identifies and empathises with the Jewish people and our connection with the land of Israel".

Past recipients of the Jerusalem Prize have included former prime ministers Bob Hawke and John Howard, and former foreign minister Alexander Downer.
