Two top RAAF pilots and another crew member from Julia Gillard's VIP crew were suspended after an all-night bender only hours after delivering the PM to a Territory funeral of Private Scott Palmer, killed in Afghanistan.

One of the pilots used a fire extinguisher to scare two female flight attendants at their hotel in the early hours before take-off to Adelaide.

The NT News says eventually three RAAF members were stood down following the July 10 incident in Darwin.

Another pilot was breath-tested and finally allowed to fly the PM and entourage onto Adelaide.

Defence media relations said the 34 Squadron has a "positive safety culture" and as this was a first occurrence, "the members were counselled and no further disciplinary action deemed necessary".
