Gillard rejects calls to cut foreign aid

The federal government is resisting calls for cuts to foreign aid spending to pay for flood reconstruction.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she believes her reconstruction package includes the right budget cuts.

"I think Australians are a generous nation and we do go to the assistance of other countries for poverty alleviation, kids that are literally at risk of starvation," she told Fairfax Radio on Friday.

"We do help our regional neighbour nations."

It was in Australia's interest for regional neighbours to be peaceful places and great education systems helped with that, Ms Gillard said.

"I'd also stress that the world is also responding to help Australia during our time of need."
