Julia Gillard will personally convey Australia's condolences over Japan's devastating natural disasters when she meets the country's leaders today.

The PM will meet emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko, Prime Minister Naoto Kan and other officials today, after arriving in Tokyo last night for the first leg of a tour of North Asia that will also take her to South Korea and China.

Gillard says as a good friend of Japan, she thinks it is important to carry the best wishes of the Australian people for the Japanese people, who face a horror almost beyond our imagination
