Australia has welcomed the arrest of Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic after 16 years on the run.
Mladic, the top Bosnian Serb general during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, was finally captured in Serbia on Thursday.
He is accused of genocide and other war crimes, including masterminding the massacre of more than 7000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995.
"We do welcome the news of this arrest ... on behalf of families who have suffered so much," Prime Minister Julia Gillard said on Friday.
"And we also welcome what it means for the future stability of the Balkans." Australia wants to see Mladic extradited to face trial in The Hague, Ms Gillard said.
