Gillett backs Bronco Haas for NSW call

Brisbane and Queensland forward Matt Gillett says boom Broncos forward Payne Haas would be a perfect fit for NSW's State of Origin team.

He doesn't fancy tackling him but Brisbane veteran Matt Gillett believes Broncos youngster Payne Haas is ready for State of Origin.

Despite playing just nine NRL matches, Haas is being tipped to be in the NSW team when Brad Fittler announces his game one squad on Sunday.

The Blues have a vacancy in their pack with Jack De Belin sidelined under the "no fault" stand down rules and Haas has emerged as a leading contender.

The 20-year-old enhanced his credentials against the Sydney Roosters' pack last weekend, running 206m with six tackle busts and scoring a try as the Broncos defeated the reigning premiers.

Gillett, himself hoping to earn an Origin spot for Queensland following his successful return from serious injury last year, believes NSW have a gem in his club teammate.

"He's a powerhouse. We all sit back and admire what Payne Haas can do for a big forward, a middle forward," Gillett said.

"He always puts his hand up to carry. He never looks tired and gets the job done.

"Just carries the ball forward and does that very well and offloads and competes for a big fella. He'd not look out of place in a NSW jersey."

Haas is fasting during the Islamic month of Ramadan, meaning he can't eat or drink from dawn to sunset.

Fellow Bronco Alex Glenn says the dedication Haas has shown to his faith while also fulfilling his football commitments is a measure of his character.

"You talk about self-discipline, he's doing it," Glenn said.

"Mentors like Sonny Bill (Williams) have been helping him and guiding him through the process but what he's doing, it's a credit to himself.

"I take my hat off to him to be doing that at a young age and playing elite football at the same time. It's very difficult."
