Five-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore had her 2014 campaign damaged by an old rival in the second round of the Rio Women's Pro on Thursday.

Gilmore, second in the rankings after three of ten events, lost to local former tour surfer Silvana Lima competing as a wildcard entry.

Injury replacement surfer Tatiana Weston-Webb of Hawaii also took advantage of her opportunity to get the better of current No.5 Bianca Buitendag of South Africa.

Defending event champion and world No.3 Tyler Wright won her third-round heat to gain direct entry to the quarter-finals as did fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons (No.4), ratings leader Carissa Moore of Hawaii and American Lakey Petersen (No.8).

Of the other Australians, Nikki Van Dijk and Laura Enever will have to win their respective round-four heats to make the quarters.

Gilmore, who won the season-opener on the Gold Coast, was "pretty disappointed" at losing by less than half a point 15.43 to 15.10 and in the half to one-metre waves at Rio's Tijuca break.

"When I saw Silvana in the draw I knew she would be dangerous because she's hungry for a win and she's been injured for a while," said Stephanie Gilmore.

"She's also one of the few girls that can do airs consistently.

"We go way back, we've had a couple of close world title races."
