Reigning six-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore has withdrawn from the final event of the women's tour in Hawaii due to an ongoing leg injury.

Gilmore's scratching from the Maui Pro means she will miss her sixth event of the season after fracturing her leg in Western Australia in April.

The injury, originally suffered during a free surf after winning her opening heat at the Margaret River Pro, forced her to miss five straight events and scuppered any hope of defending her world title.

Gilmore, 27, will now have to rely on a WSL wildcard to get a spot on next year's tour as she is currently ranked No.12 - two spots outside of the automatic qualifying cut-off.

The Maui Pro is scheduled to start this weekend.
