A teenage girl has been charged with attempted murder following an incident in which a man was set alight with petrol, northwest of Brisbane.

The 18-year-old man sustained severe burns to his head and face and was airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious but stable condition after being set alight on Saturday night at Cherbourg, say police.

A 17-year-old girl faced Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Monday where she was remanded in custody and the case adjourned until Tuesday where it will be heard at Murgon Magistrates Court.
