Australia's new Test cricketers will be given time - but interim selection boss Trevor Hohns can't say how much.

Australia's revamped Test squad assemble in Adelaide on Monday after the most stunning selection sweep of a generation.

Hohns has the prospect of six changes, including four Test debutants, for the looming Adelaide Test against South Africa starting Thursday.

"This panel, with the support of our administrators, decided to revamp our team taking into account form, ability and/or potential to perform at Test level," Hohns said.

"We see this is a very exciting challenge for everybody concerned.

"I'm not for one minute going to suggest an immediate turnaround. Patience will be required.

"But we are obviously hopeful that these players can gel together and stop the downward losing momentum we are currently experiencing."

Queensland's 20-year-old Matt Renshaw will open the batting for Australia with Nic Maddinson, 24, and Peter Handscomb, 25, in the middle order.

Swing bowler Chadd Sayers and Jackson Bird are vying to replace Joe Mennie - who with Joe Burns, Callum Ferguson and Peter Nevill were axed from the second Test side.

Batsman Adam Voges was ruled out of the third Test because of concussion while Matthew Wade replaces wicketkeeper Nevill.

While calling for patience, Hohns was reluctant to say what sort of run the newcomers would get in the Test line-up.

"It's not about how much time," he said.

"What we would like to see now is a better performance. And if this group can give us a better performance, that will gold them in good stead going."
