Glencore shutters Queensland zinc mine

Glencore has put its Black Star zinc mine in care and maintenance mode after mining out the existing reserve.

Glencore has shuttered its Black Star open cut mine in northwest Queensland after mining out the existing reserve.

The miner said Black Star, part of its Mt Isa Mines operation, produced 40 million tonnes of zinc-lead ore, 1.75 million tonnes of zinc metal and about one million tonnes of lead metal over its 13-year life.

The company had reduced operations at Black Star and said it had been redeploying many employees to other Glencore operations over the past three years.
