Global approach to stamp out sport fraud

The federal government says an international approach is needed to fight corruption within sport, such as illegal betting and match fixing.

It has backed a move by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to address the issue and called on other nations and sporting bodies for a global pledge to work together on the problem.

"The best way to fight corruption is to have an international approach that all governments and sporting bodies sign up to."

Australia has partnered the United Kingdom on measures to tackle the issue, having already met during the Delhi Commonwealth Games in October.

The two nations have pledged their support for the IOC's planned seminar in Switzerland on March 1, and promised to continue to discuss ways to protect integrity in sport.

Senator Arbib said the Australian Olympic Committee, as well as the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, had already vowed to work together.

"While there has been no evidence of systematic corruption in Australian sport, the government and Australia's major sporting bodies recognise that there are issues arising internationally," he said.

"We need to ensure that there is a zero-tolerance approach to corrupt behaviour in Australia."
