The case of a poverty-stricken Chinese student, who weighs barely more than 20kg because she was living on 30 cents a day for five years, has shocked the world.

Twenty-four-year-old Wu Huayan from the rural Guizhou Province in China was hospitalised when she nearly starved to death while struggling to study and support her ill brother.
She had been living on two yuan a day so she could save money for her ill brother's treatment since losing her father when she was 18, and her mother when she was four.

Since Ms Wu's story was reported by local media, Chinese residents have donated almost a million yuan to the student.

Ms Wu, who stands 4ft 5in tall, is now awaiting surgery thanks to the donations.

She told Guizhou City News she knew she was sick but could not afford to go to the hospital.

'I often felt no strength in my limbs, could not sleep and my feet started to swell,' she said in the interview.
Ms Wu's story sparked anger at authorities for failing to help her earlier.

Chinese officials have since confirmed she is receiving the minimum government payment, and will be provided a  20,000 yuan emergency relief fund.
