A major operation is about to get underway in Tweed Heads as NSW police continue their investigation into the murder of a nine-month-old girl who was thrown into a river.

The baby's body washed up on a Surfers Paradise beach on the Gold Coast a week ago and her father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with her murder.

It's believed the child was thrown into the river at Tweed Heads on the night of Saturday November 17.

A major land and water police operation will be conducted at Tweed Heads from 9am on Monday.

Water police and divers will search the Tweed River and foreshore areas while specialists from the Public Order and Riot Squad will scour foreshores and parkland around Jack Evans Harbour and Cunningham Park.

Police divers are conducting dives in line with tidal and current flows to try to determine what happened on the day of the incident.

Police are also asking for anyone who was in the area on the night of November 17 to come forward.
