A Gold Coast bus company appears to have a wee problem, with drivers having to be warned to stop urinating in their vehicles.

Surfside Buslines general manager Martin Hall has reportedly had to issue a statement to drivers warning they would face the sack if they were found to have taken a pee in their bus.

The Gold Coast Bulletin says Mr Hall's statement slammed the practice as "disgusting and extremely unhygienic" and he couldn't fathom why "several" drivers had been choosing to urinate in their vehicles.

"If you are unable to last long enough between bathroom opportunities without the need to urinate in cups and bottles, then you are potentially deemed as not able to carry out the inherent requirements of your role," Mr Hall's statement read.

The drivers, however, say they have been left with little choice with the company failing to provide them with access to council toilets during late night shifts when the toilets are often locked.

Brisbane drivers are given keys to public toilets but it is believed only drivers on routes near stations at Gold Coast University Hospital and Pacific Fair stations on the Gold Coast have access to bathrooms during late-night shifts.

Transport Workers Union branch secretary Peter Biagini told the Bulletin it was "unthinkable" that drivers were unable to access a toilet or wash their hands during a shift.
