A pure gold rugby ball, made in honour of Japan's shock win over South Africa at last year's Rugby World Cup, has gone on sale in Tokyo for 38 million yen ($A472,000).

The shining 2.8kg ball was displayed on Wednesday at Japan's oldest department store chain Mitsukoshi alongside other items in the annual 'Large Gold Exhibition'.

The Brave Blossoms last September produced arguably the biggest shock in World Cup history when they beat two-time champions South Africa 34-32.

Organisers also hope the gold ball can inspire further success when Japan host the 2019 World Cup.
