The future of one of Australian women's golf's premier events - the Australian Ladies Masters - is in doubt.

The Australian Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG) announced on Friday the creation of a new tournament, the Players' Championship, to be held next February at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast.

Royal Pines owner the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) say the new event replaces the Ladies Masters on its golfing schedule, ending a 24-year hosting agreement with the Ladies Masters.

"It won't fit into our calendar of events at Royal Pines," RACV spokesman Robert Hogan told AAP.

The Ladies Masters has been a big part of Australia's golfing schedule since it began in 1990.

The event has been taken out eight times by Australia's finest player Karrie Webb, while other winners include fellow women's golf greats Laura Davies and Annika Sorenstam.

Promoter Bob Tuohy owns the rights to the event and Hogan says the future of the tournament is up to him.

The Queensland Government has a conditional agreement to fund the Masters until 2018, suggesting if Tuohy does opt to find a new home for the tournament, Queensland would be the preferred destination.

Tuohy told AAP he wasn't in a position to comment at this time.
