Good day for Aussies in Wimbledon qualies

Eight Australian players have advanced in the qualifying rounds for Wimbledon at Roehampton in southwest London.

Australia's men enjoyed a strong day in the second round of qualifiers for Wimbledon at the Bank of England Club in London.

Bernard Tomic, Thanasi Kokkinakis, John-Patrick Smith, Alex Bolt and Jason Kubler all advanced to within one game of reaching the main draw for the All England Club next week.

Former world No.17 Tomic brushed aside Tomislav Brikic 6-2 6-4 in 46 minutes to set up a clash with Belgian veteran Rubens Bemelmens in the third round.

Kokkinakis, who came from a set down in his round one match, was far more impressive against Poland's Kamil Majchrzak, winning 6-1 6-4 and will face fellow South Australian Bolt on Thursday.

Bolt beat Britain's Alex Ward 6-2 6-2 after Kubler had outstayed Czech Adam Pavlasek 3-6 6-3 12-10 in a match that lasted two-and-a-half hours on a roasting hot day in southwest London.

Kubler now faces experienced Canadian Peter Polansky as he attempts to qualify for a first appearance at Wimbledon.

Queensland left-hander Smith was too good for Marcel Granollers, winning 6-3 6-4 and must now take on Michael Mmoh of the US.

It was also a good day for Australia's women with Arina Rodinova beating Jacqueline Cristina of Romania 6-1 7-6 to reach the second round.

Rodionova must now beat 20-year-old Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse to return to Wimbledon, where she was the only Australian last year to advance beyond round one.

Lizetta Cabrera progressed after coming from behind to see off former world No.50 Jana Cepelova 2-6 6-4 6-4 for a very creditable win.

Cabrera will now face American teenager Claire Liu.

Priscilla Hon beat Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets to tee up a clash with American Jamie Loeb

However, Jaimee Fourlis crashed out, losing in three sets to Viktoria Tomova of Bulgaria 6-3 2-6 6-4.
