Lucky Singh migrated with her family to Australia nine years ago. The President of Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin Sydney says it's a time her family looks forward to each year.
"Indians of all backgrounds celebrate this festival," she says.
But it's not only for those with an Indian heritage, communities across South Asia mark the event too.
The Hindu gods Lord Rama and Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, are honoured.
Praying for a prosperous future is particularly significant for Shaizy Singh, who is starting her own shoe business.
"We start with cleaning up the house, decorating, the house to welcome the goddess Lakshmi, make it beautiful for guests and the goddess to come into the house," says Singh.
