Midfielder Jarrad McVeigh has been promoted to share the Sydney Swans' captaincy with dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes for the 2011 AFL season.
Goodes has been co-captain since 2009 and 25-year-old McVeigh has been elevated to the leadership role previously held by 241-game club legend Brett Kirk and veteran defender Craig Bolton.
Kirk retired after last season, while Bolton relinquished his co-captaincy duties to concentrate on regaining fitness after being sidelined since round five last season due to an achilles injury.
Swans coach John Longmire said Goodes and McVeigh epitomised the values of the Swans and would work well together.
"Adam has been a wonderful leader for several years now, and I know he and Jarrad will combine to share the load," said Longmire, who replaced Paul Roos as head coach at the end of 2010.
"It's a big job, and they are quite different people so I believe they will complement each other as they undertake this important role for the club.
"I considered having one, two or three captains but decided a joint captaincy between Adam and Jarrad was the strongest option for us at the moment."
McVeigh was drafted by the Swans in 2002 and has played 147 games.
He won the club's best and fairest award in 2008, and was a member of the Australian side in the International Rules series against Ireland in 2010.
Goodes has won just about every accolade in the game.
The 31-year-old claimed the Brownlow Medal in 2003 and 2006, won a premiership with the Swans in 2005, is a three-time All-Australian and has represented Australia in the International Rules Series.
