It seems no swearing is allowed on Google's first smartphone, with the voice-to-text function transcribing curse words into a string of # symbols.
The Nexus One phone released earlier this month features a voice-to-text function that allows the user to dictate text messages and emails. Reuters have found that the function on the Google phone will replace swear words with ####.
A Google spokesperson has said that the function is not intended for censorship but is designed to ensure that offensive words don't accidentally appear in texts and emails, given voice recognition technology is still imperfect.
“We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent,” said Google.
