Google has reportedly announced measures to improve its policing of digital piracy, promising to respond to takedown requests from its search service "within 24 hours".

The technology giant will implement the measures in the coming months, as it aims to promote legal music download sites, the Guardian reported.

The new policy comes amid mounting pressure from film and music companies for action over copyright infringement.

Google's subsidiary, YouTube, will not be subject to the new measures, despite the fact that more than 35 hours of video are upoaded to the site every minute.

The quantity of illegal content found on YouTube drew legal action from rights-holders, including Viacom and the Premier League, the Guradian reported.

Google said it has already invested heavily in more advanced anti-piracy measures for YouTube.
