Queensland independent MP Billy Gordon has been cleared of domestic violence allegations levelled against him by a former partner.

Queensland Police issued a statement on Thursday evening that said there was insufficient evidence to press charges.

"After careful consideration of the investigation and legal opinion, it was determined there was insufficient evidence to lay charges in relation to these allegations," the statement said.

"Additionally the grounds do not currently exist for police to progress any application under the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 for a protection order."

Mr Gordon was referred to police by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in a letter to Commissioner Ian Stewart in late March after the allegations surfaced from a former partner.

The Cook MP, who quit the Labor Party in April, has always denied any wrongdoing.
