The Greens say that the government has agreed to the first 'full' parliamentary debate on Australia's involvement in the war in Afghanistan.
Greens leader Bob Brown said the reconciliation talks between the government of Hamid Karzai and Taliban leader Mullah Omar highlighted the need for the parliamentary debate.
"All MPs owe it to our troops to be fully informed on Afghanistan and the reality that military success is not on the horizon," Brown said in a statement.

The ABC reported Brown as saying the debate would likely be held in November.
"We have no exit strategy, we have no final date, we have no mapped way out, we have no commitment to those troops that this war will end sometime soon," the ABC quoted him as saying.
The Greens released a statement to challenge a report in the Australian newspaper, claiming the Greens wanted to a safe withdrawal of troops when advised by the ADF.
"The Greens maintain our position of bringing Australian troops safely home now," Brown said.
