Prime Minister Tony Abbott has indicated he may be open to negotiating changes to his planned paid parental leave scheme so it can clear parliament.

The coalition had promised to introduce a scheme during its first term.

It will be partly funded by a one per cent levy on big business and provides up to $75,000 over 26 weeks for eligible parents.

Labor opposes the plan, but the Australian Greens have flagged support for a scheme that limits the top payment to $50,000.

Mr Abbott on Wednesday told reporters he was committed to the scheme, but it "may well involve some negotiation" to get it through parliament.
