Boat arrivals to top 50,000: Carr

Foreign Minister Bob Carr says asylum seekers are arriving by boat at a rate of 40 to 50,000 a year.

The Solomon Islands could provide support to the government's new asylum seeker policy. SBS correspondent Stephan Armbruster reports from Honiara.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr arrived in the country earlier today, and while he didn't formally raise it in talks with the prime minister, he said it would be discussed with regional leaders in the near future.

"I would think this country would look at what we're doing with Papua New Guniea in terms of the Regional Resettlement Arrangement with interest," he said.

But he said there were other issues on the agenda.

"It's a regional issue, it might come up, but I'm not here to make a submission about that or twist any arms."
