If the government had been 'doing its job', three men wouldn't have had to board a Japanese vessel that was chasing anti-whaling activists, Sea Shepherd's Paul Watson says.
Sea Shepherd's leader has told SBS that he believes it is the government's responsibility to retrieve the trio, who were seized by crew on the Japanese vessel the Shonan Maru 2 after they illegally boarded it.
He says it's reasonable that taxpayers fund the operation to collect the men, as the government would do the same for wealthy yacht-owners in trouble on the sea.
