Government rolls out tougher new bail laws for terrorists, terror supporters

Legislation has passed the Senate to put tougher bail and parole conditions for accused terrorists and their supporters.

Tough new bail and parole conditions for accused terrorists have passed federal parliament's upper house on the same day as an arrest in NSW.

Terrorists and their supporters will have the presumption against bail and parole under legislation which passed the Senate on Wednesday.

It comes after a Sydney man was arrested by members of the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team.

The bill was a response to a deadly 2017 hotel siege in Melbourne, which involved a man out on bail for terrorism charges.

Yacqub Khayre held a sex worker hostage, shot the Brighton Hotel clerk dead and wounded three officers before he was killed in a shoot-out with police.

Human rights groups have raised concerns about the bill and called for exemptions to children being locked up.

It would also stop convicted terrorists getting out on continuing detention orders if they posed a safety risk.
