Government seeks penalty rates review

The federal government says the Fair Work Commission must look at penalty rates and high labour costs.

The Commission's full bench will begin hearings today into a review of the modern award system.

In its submission, the Department of Employment says modern awards need to support job creation and the commission should consider whether extra pay for working particular times of the day are appropriate in a particular industry.
